John H. Anderson Scholarships

Together, we’re working hard to protect California from the threat of invasive plants.

Cal-IPC is committed to expanding the ecological workforce to better fulfill the state’s conservation goals. Thanks to a generous donation that established Cal-IPC’s John H. Anderson Land Steward Training Fund, we are offering a limited number of scholarships to early career professionals or students in conservation and land management fields to assist with the costs of travel and/or missed work. Scholarships will include a check and waived registration to participate in 2025 Cal-IPC Symposium (November 12-15, Ventura and Online).

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

  • 20 scholarships for in-person attendance at the Ventura Beach Marriott. Awardees will receive waived registration fees (with code), including the addition of one workshop and one field trip – and a check for $400 to help cover travel costs. (Check will be available for pick up at check-in desk upon arrival. Please enter current mailing address on the application form.)
  • 20 scholarships for online attendance. Awardees will receive waived fees (with code) and a check for $100 to help cover lost work time. (Check will be mailed after the Symposium is complete, and we have verified attendance. Please enter current mailing address on the application form).

DEADLINE TO APPLY: MAY 1

Who should apply?

The John H. Anderson Scholarship supports students and early career professionals in the conservation and land management community, especially those who do not have financial support from an employer to attend training sessions. Applicants should have a strong desire to grow as conservation professionals and a pathway to apply lessons learned at this training to support invasive plant management.

Why should you attend?

  • Gain new skills and knowledge to better manage locally significant invasive plants.
  • Enhance your professional capabilities in a number of land management subjects.
  • Get DPR continuing education credits.
  • Make connections and build your network of other land management professionals.

The application process

Application Deadline: May 1.  Applications will be reviewed by a committee. Applicants will be notified whether or not they have been selected for an award by June 1. Awardees will be selected based on appropriateness of response to listed questions, completeness of the application, and demonstrated applicability of the training event to current or future organizational work and professional development. Priority will be placed on the content of responses received rather than grammar or spelling. Applicants are encouraged to do their best to get their point across regardless of writing level/ability. Up to twenty scholarship spots will be available for each event and chosen applicants will have admission fees waived. If applicants have already paid for admission, their fees will be refunded. Ventura scholarship recipients will pick up checks at the check-in desk on-site. Online scholarship recipients will have checks mailed after the event is complete, contingent upon attendance. For questions regarding application submissions, program details, and information about the Symposium, please email symposium@cal-ipc.org.
