Common names: blue corn lily

Aristea ecklonii (blue corn flower; Iridaceae) is a rhizomatous perennial herb native to South Africa that has naturalized extensively across Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and is now entering California. Its primary ecological risk is its ability to form dense, long-lived stands that create an impenetrable ground cover, effectively smothering native seedlings, crowding out other species, and threatening the biodiversity of local grasslands. It is short-statured, with broad sword-shaped leaves and blue flowers. Plants grow in wet- to moist grasslands and forest margins in their native range In addition to displacing native flora in other regions, Aristea ecklonii has been noted to impact grazing systems for wildlife.
