Identify ecosystem processes impacted: Vicia villosa has been reported to contribute up to 80 kg N/ha per year in fixed N (Hargrove 1986), which represents a substantial amount of nitrogen inputs for natural ecosystems in California . Other sources state it can fix over 200 kg N/ha (Bryant 2026). Such levels of added N could be expected to promote invasive or weedy species over native plant species (Scherer-Lorenzen et al. 2007). Vicia villosa can also alter soil pH, redistribute extractable potassium, and lower CN ratios of the soil (Hargrove 1986). Plants can form spreading, tangled mats and climb over surrounding vegetation and other structures, thereby intercepting light and reducing light availability and quality to the soil surface and to plants growing beneath them (Teasdale and Daughtry 1993). Beneath living plants, light availability is often reduced to less than 1% of unobstructed sunlight (Teasdale and Daughtry 1993). Identify type of impact or alteration: Quantitative data on the impacts of Vicia villosa on native plant communities are lacking. It is primarily a weed in agricultural systems and disturbed areas, but there is observational and anecdotal evidence that where established, it can dominate and outcompete native vegetation. As early as 1933, the species was noted as being a widespread escape capable of outcompeting both native and nonnative species (Wiggins 1933). The species is considered an escaped weedy species by UC IPM (UC ANR 2025a). It is noted (anecdotally) as harming native plants in California by UC Cooperative Extension expert Chris McDonald (UC ANR 2025b). There’s observational and other indirect evidence of negative impacts reported across multiple sites in California, including in agency reports and online resources. It is listed as one of the dominant nonnative species that have replaced natives in grasslands within Hellhole Canyon in San Diego County (ESA 2020), and the Restoration Committee of the San Diego Chapter of CNPS reports removing plants covering coastal sage scrub (Byrnes 2023). It is also categorized as invasive by Elings Park in Santa Barbara, and of the nearly 100 invasive species observed in the Park, it is one of the 32 species identified, mapped, and prioritized for possible removal (Elings Park, n.d.). Vicia villosa is also categorized as invasive in a rare plant survey report prepared for the City of Chico (WRA 2018). In upper Bidwell Park in Butte County, the species is ranked as a priority invasive species, but too widespread to control (Friends of Bidwell Park, n.d.). The species is on Marin Municipal Water District’s list of prohibited plants due to reported invasiveness (MMWD 2010). Lastly, there is evidence from a number of herbarium records which both implicitly and explicitly note impacts. The species has been reported as dominant and dense in a vernal pool complex near Sacramento (Collins 2023; CHSC 128170). Other herbarium notes describe it overtopping surrounding vegetation (Benefiel 2024; DAV 244497), and in some cases explicitly characterize it as “invasive” (Matheney 2022; SBBG 265276) or “an abundant weed” (Nelson 2015; JEPS 128420), including observations of site-level dominance (CNPS SN Foothill Team 2005; DAV 337602). Additional specimens document dominance and crowding of native wildflowers (Dean 2016; DAV 337601), and one record from Storke Ranch Open Space notes it as common, with control efforts underway (Hildner 2019; SBBG 161755). Identify type of impact or alteration: Vicia villosa seeds are toxic to cattle (Aguirre et al. 2021), pigs (Enneking 1995), and poultry (Harper and Arscott 1962). There is evidence that the species can disrupt plant-pollinator networks in California serpentine grasslands (Nelson 2024); as the ratio of invasive, non-serpentine flowers to native serpentine flowers increased, native plants received fewer pollinator visits, supported lower pollinator richness, produced fewer seeds, and played a diminished hub role in plant–pollinator networks. Donnelly and Clark (1962) assessed hybridization among four Vicia species, including V. villosa, finding that many interspecific pollinations produced no pods, or only immature or shriveled seeds. While there are native Vicia in California, these largely occur in different habitats and regions than V. villosa. A similar nonnative vetch, V. benghalensis, also occurs in similar habitats and behaves similarly, though no records of hybrids between the two species have been documented. Describe rate of spread: Evidence from grasslands of northern California suggest Vicia villosa can spread rapidly. Between 2001 and 2003, the species was record in less than 5% of 132 surveyed grid points within grasslands at the UC McLaughlin Reserve (Davies et al. 2005). In 2010 when 118 of these grid point were resurveyed, the species was present in over 20% of plots (Lau and Suwa 2016). Describe key reproductive characteristics: Vicia villosa is an annual plant species which reaches reproductive maturity in a single year/growing season (Preston and Isely 2012). Based on existing literature regarding seed set, it seems likely that dense infestations could yield >1000 viable seeds per m2 (Renzi et al. 2025). The bloom period is at least three months, suggesting seed production could be sustained over this period (Calflora 2026). Accounts of seed viability are varied, but there are reports that seed can remain viable in the soil for over 5 years (UC IPM 2023). The species is primarily an out-crosser but is capable of self fertilization (Hamadi et al. 2012). Mowing and burning are suggested as effective control methods, so there is likely minimal resprouting (USDA 2005). There is no evidence that the species spreads through rhizomes or roots. Identify dispersal mechanisms: Seeds of Vicia villosa are large and not readily dispersed other than when seed pods dry and dehisce (Cook 2002). Relatively large seed size likely limits long-distance dispersal (Yan et al. 2022). Seeds do not have any morphological characteristics to promote spread by wind or by attachment to animals. Identify other regions: Vicia villosa has a global distribution due to its use in agriculture. It is considered invasive in Poland (Urbisz and Urbisz 2006), China (Xu et al. 2012), Canada (Peralta de Andrés 2022), Ukraine (Protopopova et al. 2006), and Chile (Bustamante et al. 2025). There are references to it being listed as invasive in other US States online, including Michigan (City of Ann Arbor 2021) and Oregon (Invasives.org), but no formal listings for Oregon could be verified. As early as 1933, the species was noted as being a widespread escape capable of outcompeting both native and nonnative species (Wiggins 1933). The species is widespread throughout California at lower elevations, generally <2,000 m, and is primarily found in grasslands, roadsides, and disturbed places (Preston and Isely 2012).
