Protecting biological diversity is a key part of Cal-IPC’s mission. Protecting cultural and intellectual diversity is important to our success as well. Achieving our conservation goals requires participation across all communities in California. We want to help ensure that the range of people who actively engage in land management efforts mirrors the range of people who live in this state.

Working to engage a range of communities in conservation

Cal-IPC works to protect California’s environment and economy from invasive plants. We do this work on behalf of all Californians, and our success depends on engaging people from many backgrounds and communities. We incorporate this understanding into our work through the follow activities.

      • We maintain a committee comprising board members, staff and interested partners to support community engagement in all aspects of our work.
      • We include Cal-IPC members in guiding our work.
      • We maintain and implement an action plan that provides details on ways to support community engagement.
      • We ensure that written and oral communications use language that is appropriate for all communities.
      • We design programs that serve a wide range of communities.
      • We set a positive example for community engagement withing the broader conservation field.
      • We use our communications – including our newsletter, social media and Symposium – to open dialog and share stories from a range of communities.
      • We employ best practices in recruitment, hiring and retention and foster an exemplary professional workplace.
      • We empower individuals to provide feedback to each other in a constructive and respectful manner.
